Botox for Excessive Sweating

Botox is a purified protein used to address wrinkles associated with facial expression. One of the less common applications for Botox is for the treatment of hyperhidrosis, or excess sweating.

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterized by excessive sweating. The sweating is most commonly found on three areas: the underarms, the palms of the hands, and the soles of the feet. Hyperhidrosis affects approximately 3% of the United States population and it can have significant effects on the quality of a person's life. Some people have difficulty shaking hands with others because of the excess sweat. Some people need to change their clothes multiple times during the day because their clothes get wet under the underarms.

How is hyperhidrosis treated?

A new device called MiraDry uses microwave technology which also treats hyperhidrosis. But Botox is the most common treatment for hyperhidrosis. Botox works by blocking the conduction of the nerve to muscles in the face, and Botox blocks the release of sweat in the sweat glands on the body. Typically 50 units of Botox are placed on each side for a total dose of 100 units. Usually small amounts of Botox are placed in the treatment area and are spread out to control the sweating in the entire area. Since the areas most commonly affected by hyperhidrosis are sensitive, we apply numbing cream in the area for about 15 minutes prior to the Botox treatment.

When do you see the results of a Botox treatment for excessive sweating?

Most people see the results of their Botox treatment in a few days. But it could take up to two weeks to see full results.

How long do the results of a Botox treatment for excessive sweating last?

In the face and neck, most people enjoy the results of their Botox treatment for three to four months. However, there is some variability. For example some people only enjoy their Botox results for two months and some people enjoy their Botox results for up to a year. When used to treat excessive sweating, most people enjoy their Botox results for about six months. And the more Botox treatments you have as time goes on, the longer this will last. Some people enjoy their Botox result for a full year.
