What’s New with Qwo

Have you heard about Qwo, the most recent treatment for cellulite? Keep reading to learn more.

What is cellulite?

Cellulite is an irregular texture found on certain areas of your skin like the buttocks and thighs. Instead of your skin being smooth, you see indentations that make it look irregular.

What causes cellulite?

There are multiple factors that contribute to the formation of cellulite. You have vertical bands that connect your skin with deeper tissues like muscles. Particularly in women, they can get thick and fibrous. When this happens, they pull down on the skin and you can see indentations called cellulite.

What is Qwo?

Qwo is the first and thus-far only FDA-approved, non-surgical, injectable treatment for cellulite. The active ingredient in Qwo is an enzyme that breaks down the proteins in the fibrous bands that cause cellulite. It has been available in the United States for over a year.

What are the side effects of Qwo?

Like any injection, side effects of Qwo include pain, bleeding, bruising, and infection. The most common one is bruising. But it’s not the usual bruising you’ll see immediately after an injection. Instead, you start to see it a few days later and it can last a long time. That’s because the active ingredient that targets the bands also targets blood vessels in the area. After a few days, they leak blood and leave a bruise that can last weeks to months.

What can be done about bruising from Qwo?

At A E Skin, we routinely treat bruises with lasers. Bruises can be seen after any injectable treatment, mostly from fillers. The laser targets the blood and makes the bruise resolve more quickly. With the bruising from Qwo, a different laser technique is used. It warms up the skin to make your body get rid of the bruise faster.

Is Qwo worth the side effects?

The manufacturer of Qwo is currently investing in research to address it. If the bruises can be treated relatively quickly, it’s not a big issue. But many offices do not have the technology to address the bruising. So many people are afraid to continue with their series of Qwo treatments when they see long-lasting bruising. Hopefully, they can find ways to minimize bruising. However, the company that makes Qwo recently filed for bankruptcy and due to the bruising as well as other drugs the company makes. So Qwo may not be available for too much longer, but perhaps other alternatives will be available soon.
